Interview: Anthony Faulkner Talks Life and Musical Journey

Anthony Faulkner is an international Gospel music artist who has had successful tours on four continents. His voice can be heard on music projects by MTV, Radio Disney, American Dream, Yolanda Adams, and Clifton Davis.

The Gospel Source thought it would be great to talk more in depth with Anthony Faulkner, to find out more about his life, his travels, his amazing music career, and his new single, “I Trust You”.

TGS: Let’s talk about your beginnings. How did you get started in music?

Anthony: I went to church in Los Angeles. One day A’ngela Winbush walked up to me and asked me if I liked music. I was 9 years old at the time, and I didn’t know who she was, I just knew she stood out from everybody else in the church, which was a fairly large church. A’ngela would always have this man with her. It wasn’t until I saw a commercial for the Soul Train Music Awards that I really found out who the guy was. He was Ronald Isley (The Isley Brothers).

She (A’ngela) told me to learn to play piano and then play saxophone just to try to find out where I would land musically. But it wasn’t until I saw her on the Soul Train Awards that I said mommy, “I want to sing.”

The rest is history. I joined the church choir and studied voice and Musical Theater for four years at the Alexander Hamilton Academy of Music (Los Angeles).

TGS: You’re a writer, producer, a director, and actor. You have so many wonderful gifts. Tell me about those gifts and how it all works together.

Anthony: When I’m speaking and traveling all over the world, I always say that it’s really good to have a mentor because a mentor can help you find your other hidden talents that you may not be aware of. So if it wasn’t for A’ngela Winbush, I wouldn’t have known I could write music or direct, or do a lot of the musical things I do.

My very first TV appearance was on MTV, “The Cut”… which was hosted by Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez. From there I did some background for shows like, Moesha and Malcolm In The Middle, and I was able to get some feature work in, American Dream. I actually co-wrote the theme song.

I ended up having one of my first studio sessions – with Yolanda Adams on her first Christmas CD. An agent of mine in Los Angeles had called me for the job. That’s how I met Rickey Grundy, Gospel music pioneer who wrote the song “If You Confess The Lord, Call Him Up”. He took me under his wings. He (Rickey) has a massive European following. Rickey said, “You know what… it’s time for you to grow.” And I said, “Well can we do baby steps?” Turns out, my very first time directing a choir, was in front of a 1500 voice choir in Aarhus, Denmark.

Working with Rickey Grundy, and merging what A’ngela and Ronald taught me over the years… I put it together with what I learned through trial and error. All of those things have allowed me to become better at what I do.

TGS: Sounds like you’ve had some wonderful experiences. And, I know you’ve had the opportunity to travel abroad and do successful tours internationally. Tell us about that experience.

Anthony: Well it started when I was on TBN. I was working with Rickey Grundy, and he had released a CD in Europe called, “Testimony” that did very well. But it wasn’t until we came back to the U.S. and did a feature on TBN, that I received a life-changing prophecy on international television. From there, I received my first invitation from Nigeria to come as a solo artist. I was a guest of the president’s wife. It was an amazing experience for me.

Then I was invited to South Africa. I was the first American to work with Joy Celebration… which is the biggest and most prestigious choir in all of South Africa. I did two songs for them. And I’m happy to say they recorded my song “Let It All Go”, and it did very well. The CD went platinum in South Africa. As I traveled with artists, I also co-wrote songs and collaborated with them. It’s been a great experience.

TGS: I know that your current single is, “I Trust You”, and it is impacting radio all across the world. Tell me, how did you come up with the name for the single?

Anthony: “I Trust You”. I wrote that when I was transitioning from Los Angeles to Houston, TX. And I said, “Lord, I’m leaving everything that’s familiar to me. It’s time for me to grow.” I was ready to really start living. So, I moved. Again, I said, “Lord I don’t know what’s next for me…, but you’ve never left my side. You’ve always met my every need. I Trust You.” The song is a true testament of my life.

TGS: How would you describe the feel for the song?

Anthony: I would describe it as inspirational. It’s crossed barriers already, all over the world, so I don’t want to put it in a box. It’s a praise and worship song as well.

TGS: The CD is coming sometime this year. Tell us a little about the CD?

Anthony: The CD, Guardian Angel, has been a work in progress. I’m excited to say that it’s done. The song (“I Trust You”) is doing well at radio. It’s climbing the charts. I wanted to release it in America because I want the U.S. to know Anthony Faulkner. If all goes well, I’m looking for the full CD project to be released soon.

TGS: Is there anything else you would like to share with us.

Anthony: Yes. I would like to talk about my foundation. It’s called The Faulkner Foundation. What we do is, we go to various orphanages in the countries I visit, just to share some love and let people know, there is hope. For me, it’s important to give back.

TGS: Tell us where we can purchase the single and how we can connect with you on social media.

Anthony: The single is available on iTunes and all other digital outlets. If you want a hard copy of the CD, you can go to Amazon.com and type in Anthony Faulkner, I Trust You. You can reach me on social media… my musician page is Anthony Faulkner. On Instagram it’s Faulkner Anthony (backwards)/ On Twitter, it’s Faulkner Anthony as well. I’m always on social media. I love interacting with everyone.
